State approves new rules for personal care homes

(2/25/2005)--The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the state has approved changes to the personal care home industry, despite objections from care providers, who say the changes will be financially burdensome. The groups say the financial burden could force smaller homes to close.

The update drew praise from advocates for the elderly, who say that the new regulations will improve patient care at these homes. Under the new rules, medication will be dispensed more accurately, staffers will be regularly trained and the homes themselves will be safer, with improved smoke alarm systems and fire exits. The regulations are expected to take effect in October.
