Disabled fighting two battles: ending abuse by caregivers and raising awareness
(1/14/2004) - The Philadelphia Inquirer reports today that “victims of crime who have mental or physical disabilities are often victimized twice—once by the criminal and again by a system that is ignorant or unresponsive to their special needs.” According to the article, studies show that 54 million Americans who live with a disability are victimized far more frequently that the general population. Violence frequently comes from caregivers and service professionals. But disabled and victims' rights groups are raising awareness.
