Leach to outline plan to keep doctors on the job in Pennsylvania

Text of April 8, 2004 media advisory.

HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, will be joined by area doctors to announce the introduction of the MCARE Relief Extension Act at a news conference in Bryn Mawr.

“The current two-year relief plan has had a positive impact on helping doctors pay their ever-growing medical malpractice bills,” Leach said. “But, now it’s time to take the next logical step. We need to let our doctors know that we’re going to do everything we can to help them stay in the Keystone State and care for their patients.

“My MCARE Relief Extension Act would take that step, and give our doctors peace of mind so they can keep their practices operating.”

The news conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16 in the main lobby of Bryn Mawr Hospital, 130 S. Bryn Mawr Ave.

The current MCARE law helps doctors reduce their annual malpractice insurance costs by subsidizing the assessment they pay to the state’s catastrophic medical malpractice insurance fund using revenue from the state’s cigarette tax. Doctors in high-risk specialties have their entire MCARE assessment subsidized; other doctors have 50 percent of their assessment subsidized.
