Med-Mal filings in Phila. decline in 2003

(12/23/2003) -- The Legal Intelligencer has reported that Philadelphia Common Pleas Court has seen a 61 percent drop in the number of medical malpractice cases filed in Philadelphia this year. The Legal reports that there were 526 cases as of Dec. 4, compared with 1,352 filed in 2002, based on court statistics. The report attributes the drop in part to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s revision of the civil procedure rule governing venue for professional liability cases. The article goes on to say that med-mal cases still constitute about half of filed civil cases that proceed to trial in Philadelphia. According the article, Judge Willliam J. Manfredi, who supervises the civil division, said it’s unclear whether the med-mal cases were filed elsewhere under the new venue rule or not filed at all.
