Stop treating trial lawyers and their families,
South Carolina doctor urges fellow physicians

(4/2/2023) - The Miami Herald reported this week that a prominent Charleston, S.C. surgeon ignited an ethical debate by urging fellow physicians at the South Carolina Medical Association's annual meeting to stop treating plaintiffs' attorneys and their families.

According to the Herald article, Dr. Chris Hawk, who said he's trying to start a grass-roots movement, issued his call during the association's House of Delegates meeting, citing doctors' concerns that legislation making its way through the General Assembly doesn't go far enough to put the brakes on liability insurance rates.

"This idea may be repulsive," Hawk said. "It's hardball. It is bold. (But) it is ethical."
